More city improvements are underway! The plan for Father Marquette Park has finally been set into action.
Back in 2004, the Marquette Beautification & Restoration Committee began restoring the statue of Father Marquette. It sits in the park overlooking Lakeshore Boulevard, Lake Superior and the ore dock. Established in 1978, the Marquette Beautification & Restoration Committee, Inc. is a nonprofit organization made of volunteers who give their time to contribute to the visual enhancement of Marquette. Now, the city has the ability to fix the park surrounding the statue with hopes that more visitors will stop by.
Furthermore, in previous posts, we’ve discussed all of the changes Marquette is going through and will continue to go through in the upcoming years. The Father Marquette Park was always a topic of discussion, but without definitive details. Refer to these past posts for more information about updates around the city:
In a recent Mining Journal article, details about the park improvements are disclosed.
Some highlights of the project include:
- better accessibility
- improved lighting
- enhanced security
- better irrigation
- official entryway
- artwork for benches
To add, the Beautification Committee plans to dedicate the park during the summer of 2018, upon completion of the improvements. The current statue of Father Marquette was gifted to the city in 1898, according to the article. As far as funds to complete the project go, U.P. Concrete Company will be making the improvements for $142,000. Additionally, a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund grant was awarded to the city in the amount of $140,000. Especially relevant, the Beautification Committee raised $60,000 in local funds to contribute to the project as well.
Here’s to a better Marquette. We can’t wait to see the changes take place!
